So in order to really define the role, I think it would be a good idea to try and define the word as a community. Try and be as succinct as possible, with no copy/paste from dictionary.com (please). Also try not to suggest skill bonuses, although I realise that this may be your only way of demonstrating what best reflects the word in Dust.
To me, the word means GÇ£attackGÇ¥. Whether through physical or mental force. The words GÇ£pressureGÇ¥ and GÇ£agressiveGÇ¥ come to mind immediately as well as images of soldiers storming the beaches of Normandy or the Battle of Berlin. From this I feel that assault suits should be the go to suit when pressing an objective, skill bonuses for which we can figure out once we have defined the meaning.
Thanks for your time guys, make this a good one.
In my opinion what each role is meant to be:
The Scout:
Guerrilla soldier and recon soldier. Moves about the Field either putting pressure away from the front or finding weaknesses/leading flanking maneuvers with the front.
The Pilot:
Operations expert on vehicles. Their abilities would augment the vehicles capabilities while being diminished in infantry combat (The ability to augment vehicles in various attributes like turn speed, damage, acceleration, top speed, but only carries a side arm with the additional squishiness of light suits.)
The Assault:
Shock Trooper/Frontline Soldier. The typical bulk of the line designed to quickly push or adjust to wherever the front may be moving. Mobility is what allows it to quickly shift priorities (Important to note when considering Sentinels/Commandos.)
The Logistics:
The Support class. Designed to utilize equipment to establish fortified positions and bring troops to the front/maintain the frontline troops. They can also provide fire support with the rest of the line.
The Sentinel:
The Heavy Support Class, meant to hold a fortified position, however it's low mobility means it cannot respond to ever evolving threats as quickly as the assault and scouts.
The Commando:
The Hybrid Assault which trades mobility for a more versatile selection of weaponry.
Vehicle Roles:
LAV: Fast but vulnerable ground Vehicles designed for light transport and harassment.
MAV: Slower but more sturdy vehicles designed primarily for transport and small weapons platform support.
HAV: Slow but extremely sturdy vehicles designed to carry heavy and light weapons platform support.
Fighters: Fast skirmishing aerial vehicles designed to harass both land and air units. Fighters would be incredibly fast but flimsy like LAVS.
Dropships: Transport aerial vehicles designed for small weapons platform support.
Bombers: Heavy aerial vehicles designed for air to surface bombardment. They would be sturdy like Tanks and capable of obliterating fortified positions, but given their size and slow acceleration they would be bullet magnets in the sky and would go down if focus fired.
Now what is and what I think should be are obviously two different things.
Edit: Also keep in mind having a 16v16 cap on a battlefield style game makes a lot of this stuff underwhelming and often things just turn into Halo TDM. |

Utility weapon Slot: A specially designed slot able to hold AV weapons, a grenade, or knives.
This would give Assault suits a truly assault worthy specialization, able to field a sidearm, a light weapon, AND an AV weapon or a knife or another type of grenade. This would increase their versatility by enabling them to do something no other suit can do. Field three weapons or two weapons and two types of grenades.
EDIT: While still preserving the role of the Commando to hold two light weapons. Maybe the commando would need a grenade slot to balance this out.
They would have to add a useful AV weapon then as I think a forge gun would be OP on an assault suit and that is the only good AV weapon at the moment.
The Assaults are fine, the issue is there are certain suits like the gallente scout that got over buffed. And Commandos pay for their double light weapon and slightly more ehp by being slow moving fat suits. Sentinels with a Light weapon still generally out perform commandos. There being no useful AV light weapon is part of the reason why most commandos are unnecessary and are just non-competitive fun builds. Logi suits shouldn't be able to have more ehp then an assault suit as well.
Assaults are fine, just everything else needs a little tweaking around them. |

You don't balance by changing everything else, you change the odd one out. If everything else is the odd one out then explain to me what you think GÇ£odd one outGÇ¥ means.
Well I just mean that if you buff assaults then it's going to put heavies and scouts down into the **** poor pit again where they were before 1.8. The trick is getting them to have a defining role, which assaults do, it's just some scout racial variants and some heavy racial variants are better than others and likewise better than the assaults.
It's a temperamental thing this so called balance. It's more to do with inequality amongst racial variants then inequality amongst class types. |
